Five Essential Services You’ll Need to Find When You Move to Manchester

manchesterI moved to Manchester just over three years ago when I started a job in the city centre. It seems that more and more people are doing the same, especially since the BBC moved to MediaCity in Salford Quays. There is a strong business community here, and people often find that their cost of living is significantly less than if they were living in the capital. I’ve been thinking about the reasons why I love living here, as well as the practicalities of Manchester life.

You’ll find many blog posts on what makes Manchester great, but I thought it might be helpful for you if I shared my local knowledge with you in a different way. So that’s why I’ve written this post on essential services you’ll need to find when you move here; it’s very easy to forget about the everyday things and simply start looking for your local pub! Here are my suggestions…

Doctors

I’d recommend registering with your local GP as soon as possible as it can make things easier when you actually need to book your first appointment. Some GPs will require a quick health check appointment with you too, where they take your weight, height, blood pressure and a urine sample. You’ll be able to find which NHS practices are accepting patients by looking online and searching by entering your postcode; call the surgery if the information is not on their website.

Plumber

I really wish I’d done this sooner myself as I had problems with a leak in my bathroom, as well as a strange issue with my radiators. I had to call in an emergency plumber as I didn’t have any other contacts, and I was charged more as a result. I’d always advise getting a recommendation from someone you know, or else relying on reviews online.

Solicitor

For all of life’s ups and downs, I’d recommend you look at the range of solicitors in Manchester before choosing a local company who can help you with legal matters. You never quite know when you’re going to need their services, whether it is an employment issue or when you come to sell your property. It’s a good idea to build a relationship with your solicitor so they’re there to help when you need it.

Hairdresser

It might not be an essential service for everyone, but if you have unruly hair like me, you’ll know how important it is to find a good hairdresser! I need to go every month, and I’m very particular about the way it is cut and styled. Although I did think it would be a little over the top to travel down to London to get it cut so I spent a while researching what salons were highly rated in Manchester instead.

Dentist

Finally, you’ll also want to find an NHS or private practice dentist who is accepting patients. Not only will you want to book in your six month check-ups, but you never know if you’ll have a dental emergency such as chipping a tooth or a filling falling out. Search online for the closest dentists to you and then make a decision about which one best suits your needs.
