The Best New Artist Award Goes to…
This category is perhaps the most pivotal for artists entering the industry and for winner Samara Joy, her award win not only celebrates her success at the start of her musical career but offers her recognition for her talent and potential. The 23-year-old American Jazz singer released her debut album in 2021 which led to her being named the Best New Artist by JazzTimes. After releasing her second album in September 2022, Linger Awhile, Samara was nominated for a number of categories at the 2023 Grammy awards, and subsequently secured the winning titles of Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best New Artist.
Born and raised in New York, Samara has proven to be a rising star and is on her journey to global recognition, was named as Best Vocalist in a High School competition, and also won the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition. Samara isn’t the only up-and-coming musician in the most populous city in the United States, with New York artists rising to the spotlight across a variety of genres. From jazz to indie, and rock to pop, talent is brimming in the concrete jungle with musicians that promise to take the music scene by storm.
Successful Nominees in Other Categories
Much like Samara, there were other artists that took more than one prize home in the 2023 Grammy’s, including another nominee from the Best New Artist category, Wet Leg. Wet Leg appeared across a number of categories and claimed the top spot for Best Alternative Music Performance and Best Alternative Music Album, as well as being nominated in other Grammy award categories.
Other successful nominees whose music has been prominent in the industry for some time included Lizzo, Harry Styles, Adele, and Beyonce. The latter, who is regularly referred to as Queen Bey, was crowned winner of the Song of the Year award for Break My Soul. In total, Beyonce has taken 32 awards home and is an influential figure to many.
Nominees That Took to the Stage to Perform
As well as recognizing talent, the Grammy’s witnessed talent. It wouldn’t be the Grammy’s without an exciting line-up and several nominees and winners took to the stage to put on a performance. Harry Styles was adored by many as he performed music from his most recent album, Harry’s House, which won the Album of the Year award. Other performers included Lizzo, Sam Smith, and Stevie Wonder.
